Welcome Back - Ahlan wa Sahlan - Namaskar

You would’ve expected moaning, groaning, and all round Debbie Downers complaining about how once college re-opened, they would have to deal with a new set of subjects, heavy text books, an abundance of assignments coupled with dreaded projects, but you would be wrong.

With enough smiles to light up an entire city, the second and third year students attended the first day of their new session at Manipal University Dubai. Excitement was abuzz with students greeting and meeting each other with hugs and shrieks after their long summer break and vacations.

Welcome Back!

Manipal Ends The Academic Year With A Bang

Saturday, May 15, 2010, saw the most talented crop of Manipal students accumulating in one place to display their prowess. Held at The Sheikh Rashid Auditorium, Dubai, this edition of the Manipal Annual Talent’s Day, was a resounding success.
The event kick started with the launch of the much awaited ‘Manipal Pulse’ – The Manipal Dubai Yearbook. The yearbook was unveiled on stage by Dr. Vinod Bhat, Dr. Ramjee, Mrs. Uma Prasad and Mr Sabir Haque along with the Editorial team. The event was divided into three segments. The first segment sought to enchant the audience with eastern and western singing in both – the group as well as solo categories. The auditorium resounded with the melodies hummed by our talented students.
The next segment was intended to honour the theatrical arts of creative ads and dance. The creative ads competition was closely competed for by groups of student who used witty and hilarious plots to showcase their marketing skills. Not surprisingly, the First place was bagged by second year students of the BBA department.
In the duet and group dance categories, the students swayed in sync to the latest foot-tapping tunes. The group dance category in particular, saw students from different departments coming together to form a powerhouse of electrifying talent. Dances included two modernistic dance themes, and even a Michael Jackson tribute by the troupe that won laurels for the University at the Spring Fiesta Western Category.
The singing and duet dance segment was hosted by Haresh Harikumar (second year ISM) and Maria A.D (second year Media). The podium was handed over to Waqaar Ali Khan (Foundation) and Deepa (third year ID). The hosts were lively and kept the audience entertained with their silly antics.
Judges for the competition included Ms Rani of the radio 89.1 fame as well as Sinduja Sounderajan, a dancer, and Mrs. Arathi Ajay Prasad who is a management professional and a singer. All The categories were keenly competed for and choosing the best among the students was a tough task.
An awards ceremony was held to cumulatively appreciate winners of all inter-college co-curricular events that took place in this Academic Year. The glittering trophies were handed over to the students by our administration and judges.
The Manipal students and faculty came together to cheer on the participants in what turned out to be a highly enjoyable and the perfect way to end a weekend.

Manipal Student wins third place at Murdoch Student Photography Competition 2010

The second annual edition of 2010 Student Photography exhibition hosted by Murdoch University, Dubai and organized by the Dubai International Academic City, Student Hub was held on 13th May 2010. Shilpa Ramesh, a student from Manipal University, won the third place in the student photography competition.

The competition was open to UAE high school students, UAE University Students and the Murdoch University Media Students. The theme of the competition was ‘Street photography: A world in a city’, which aims to showcase diversity in the UAE.

"Street photography is a type of documentary photography that features subjects in candid situations within public places. A good street photograph does not always depend on the photographer's creativity and technical knowledge, but it often requires a bit of luck to capture a once-in-a-lifetime event that may occur in a blink of an eye," said Mr. John Grainger, Dean of Murdoch University, Dubai.

The jury consisted of four renowned photographers namely, Clint Mclean (Photographer and Photo editor of National Magazine, based in Abu Dhabi), David Taylor Bramley (Award winning worldwide advertising and commercial photography), Celia Peterson (Photographer of National Geographic and Arabian eye) and Lucy Huggins (Photographer at Bareface Team).

The selection of the shortlisted photographs for the exhibition and the awarded winners were carefully examined by the judges. Celia Peterson elaborated on the judging selection where Round one, consisted of ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ of the photograph followed by a selection where two out of four judges had to agree to the photograph. Round two marked the photographs on the basis of a 20 point scheme which enabled the selection of the top 10 and ultimately the three winners.

“We are proud to have a student from our University, securing a place at the Murdoch Photography Competition this year,” said Ms. Uma Prasad, the Student Services Coordinator at Manipal University, Dubai.

‘We are even more pleased that Shilpa, being a management student has taken an initiative and pursued her hobby of photography at a professional level and for that we congratulate her and wish her best of luck in the future.’ she added.

Ms. Shilpa Ramesh, who graduated from Manipal University, Dubai in 2009, is currently pursuing CMA Accounts. Shilpa recounts that when she submitted the photograph for the competition she didn’t expect to win. “I really didn’t expect it, but I must say that photography has always been my passion,” said Shilpa clearly thrilled by her win.

Celia Peterson, one of the three judges, said, “Shilpa’s entry was quirky, humorous and something we all enjoyed seeing.”

Preceding Shilpa’s winning entry, Abhinav Sharma (BITS Pilani, Dubai) and Rohan Joseph (Murdoch University, Dubai) bagged the first and second places respectively.

Concurrently, Ms. Jyoti Mansukhani, a second year student from the Department of Media and Communications was also shortlisted under the same category.
